Hi! I'm Rodney

Hi! I used to work as a newspaper printer. Now, I'm a member of IPI (the Information Physics Institute). My hobbies include reading, writing, listening to pop music, watching TV, the Internet and my laptop / smartphone, and light exercise.
I do a lot of writing. My personal website is my profile on ResearchGate (I'm not on any social media sites). There, you can read my science preprints (articles). The business website lists the latest book I've written ("From Scientific Curiosity to Utopia"). Most of my books are on Amazon but this one's by Eliva Press.

Distinguished and Famous people from Parkes Shire

🔭 John Bolton

John Bolton became the first director of the Parkes radio telescope, helping establish its scientific work after the instrument opened in 1961. His career had already included major advances in identifying cosmic radio sources. At Parkes he also helped arrange the observatory’s involvement in Apollo 11, when its large dish received signals from the Moon. That famous event sat within a much longer programme of radio astronomy. His contribution connects the district with both painstaking scientific observation and a moment when a rural telescope became part of an international television audience’s experience.

Bolton was also responsible for the Parkes catalogue, recording more than 8,000 radio sources, including hundreds of quasars. His ashes were later placed beneath a commemorative sundial at the observatory, and its tree-lined approach to the observers’ quarters was named John Bolton Avenue in 2001. Scientific records and the landscape of the observatory both preserve his association.

🏑 Mariah Williams

Mariah Williams began playing hockey at four and attended Middleton Public School in Parkes before moving to Newcastle at thirteen for sporting opportunities. A Wiradjuri woman, she progressed to the Hockeyroos and competed at the Rio, Tokyo and Paris Olympics. Injuries and surgery interrupted parts of her career, requiring sustained rehabilitation as well as competitive training. Her later cultural-education work included the Australian Institute of Sport’s Share a Yarn programme. Parkes was where the early enthusiasm took shape, before international competition made both persistence and recovery central parts of the story.

🎙️ Bob and Anne Steel

Bob and Anne Steel opened their Elvis-inspired Gracelands venue in Parkes in 1981 and helped turn a local idea into the Elvis Festival, first held in 1993. Community organisers, volunteers and council support subsequently built the event into a major attraction. The entertaining connection is with the people who created the celebration: Elvis himself never visited Parkes. The Steels’ achievement was recognising that enthusiasm, music and a willingness to dress for the occasion could give a country town an unusually distinctive summer gathering. An unlikely idea became a lasting part of the local calendar.
