Parkes Shire is a local government area in the Central West region of New South Wales, Australia. The shire is located adjacent to the Newell Highway and the Main Western railway line.
The shire covers an area of 5,615 square kilometres and has a population of approximately 16,500 people. The local economy is primarily based on agriculture, with wheat, canola, and wool being the main products.
The shire is home to the Parkes Observatory, a complex of radio telescopes that played a key role in the Apollo 11 moon landing in 1969. The observatory is now operated by the Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) and is open to the public for tours.
Other attractions in the shire include the old Parkes railway station, which now houses a museum dedicated to the history of the railway in the region, and the Parkes Motor Museum, which features a collection of vintage and classic cars.
The shire is also home to a number of national parks, including Goobang, Conimbla, and Warrumbungle National Parks, which offer opportunities for hiking, camping, and wildlife watching.
